Nirmal Kumar Sen received his DSc from University of Dacca, Bangladesh. He was Professor and Head, Department of Chemistry, Presidency College, Kolkata; and also Founder Director, State Forensic Science Laboratory, West Bengal.
Academic and Research Achievements: Sen did some work on chemical investigation of jute seeds. He received training in Forensic Science at Metroplitan Police Laboratory of New Scotland Yard, London. He established the first Forensic Science Laboratory in India at Kolkata and other Central/State laboratories across the country. He is considered to be the pioneer of forensic science research in India. He successfully investigated many criminal cases, including that of Din Dayal Upadhayay murder case.
Awards and Honours: Sen received Elliot Prize in Chemistry of the Royal Asiatic Society. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Institute of Chemistry (1950) and Indian Academy of Forensic Science (1976)
