Summary

Gobind Singh Thapar obtained PhD (1925) from University of London, UK. He served as Demonstrator, Government College, Lahore (1915-17); Professor of Biology, Islamia College, Peshawar (1917-18) and Canning College, Lucknow (1918-22); Lecturer (1922-27), Reader (1927-49) and Professor & Head of Zoology Department (1949-54), University of Lucknow.

Academic and Research Achievements: Thapar did extensive work in helminthology. He discovered new helminthes belonging to Trematodes, Cestodes, Nematodes and Acanthacephala in many animals. He established a new classification of Acanthocephala; studied diseases of domestic animals and discovered the parasites of hump-sore and Nazar granuloma of cattle, while making a survey of parasitic infections of domestic animals in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Orissa, Bengal, and Assam.

Other Contributions:Thapar was Officer-in-charge, Helminthiasis Scheme of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (1935-52); Editor of Indian Journal of Helminthology and Proceedings of All-India Congress of Zoology (1965) and Member of the Royal Microscopic Society, London.

Awards and Honours: Professor Thapar received the Bhalerao Memorial Gold Medal (1957) and Dr SN Singh Memorial Gold Medal (1983-84). He was elected Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore, Zoological Society of India, and Helminthological Society of India; and President, Zoology Section, Indian Science Congress (1937).
