Summary

Harbans Lal Chibber obtained his Doctorate in Science (Panjab University, Lahore, 1927) and completed his PhD (1933) from the University of London. His areas of specialization were geography and geology. He was the Head of Department of Geography and Geology of University of Rangoon, Burma, Assistant Superintendent (1928-31) of the Geological Survey of India and the Professor and Head (1940-55) of the Department of Geography, Banaras Hindu University,Varanasi.

Academic and Research Achievements: Chhibber worked for a number of years in Burma and China. He explored geographically, the Hukawin Valley and Naga Hills and investigated several parts of the Himalayas, namely Nepal, Kashmir, the Tehri Garhwal Himalaya and the Doon Valley.

Other Contributions: On the invitation of Dr S Radhakrishnan, Chhibber organized a new Department of Geography at BHU, Varanasi. He authored books on the physiography, geography and mineral resources of Burma as well.

Awards and Honours: HL Chhibber was a Fellow of the National Geographical Society of India, Royal Geographical Society, Geological Society of London, National Academy of Sciences (India), Allahabad and Geological, Mining and Metallurgical Society of India . He was the President of the Geology and Geography Section of the Indian Science Congress in 1954.
