Summary

Jatindra Nath Basu completed his Dr Ing in 1927 from the Technische Hochschule, Berlin, Germany. His areas of specialization were mechanical and industrial Engineering. He held the position of Professor of Mechanical Engineering (1927-58), College of Engineering and Technology, Jadavpur.

Academic and Research Achievements: Basu's specialization was in the fields of heat and power engines and industrial administration. He worked on the fuel injection system of the diesel engine, and invested new designs for the fuel pump, fuel nozzle and fuel cam, which led to economic fuel consumption in diesel engines and a constant pressure combustion line on the indicator diagram of the engine as well as maximum thermal efficiency. He designed and developed apparatus, jigs and fixtures for batch-production of sheet metal. He took a patent for his novel design of a mechanical lighter. He also did research on wind power.

Other Contributions: JN Basu was responsible for the publication of Industrial Administration. He was consultant to the National Council of Applied Economic Research on the scope of small-scale industries in West Bengal and Rajasthan.

Awards and Honours: Basu was a Member of the Institution of Engineers (India). He was council member and Chairman of the Mechanical Engineering Section, Indian Science Congress (1952). He was also a member of the German Association of Engineers and the Aeronautical Society of India, and served in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly (1952-57).
