Summary

Kramadhati Venkata Giri earned his DSc degree (1938) from the University of Calcutta. His specialization was in biochemistry. He was Reader in Biochemistry, Andhra University, Waltair and a Professor of Biochemistry, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.

Academic and Research Achievements: Giri studied water-soluble vitamins like thiamine (vitamin B1), biotin, ascorbic acid and riboflavin (Vitamin B2). He was a pioneer in enzyme research. He found that green gram was a good source of phosphorylase. He purified the enzyme and studied its behaviour towards substances of biological importance. He also made a systematic survey of the free amino acid content of several edible leaves and leaves of the genus Citrus. The presence of free hydroxyproline in the plant kingdom was first reported by Giri. With the demonstration that some of the B-vitamins like nicotinic acid and riboflavin function as components of enzymes, he paid more attention to the role of these vitamins in plants. He investigated the form in which riboflavin occurs in plants and the enzymatic synthesis of the flavin coenzyme nucleotides. Giri initiated a systematic study on the mechanism of blood coagulation and made important contributions to the development of paper chromatography as a powerful tool in biochemical research and developed a simple technique of agar electrophoresis for separating serum proteins.
