Summary

Sreenivas Laxminarasimha Malurkar obtained his MSc from University of Cambridge, UK specializing in mathematical physics, meteorology and geophysics. He served as Director, Colaba and Alibagh Observatories, Mumbai.

Academic and Research Achievements: Malukar’s researches spanned mathematics, spectroscopy, meteorology and geophysics. In the area of meteorology he worked on the relaxation between winds and the pressure at low latitudes and, in general, on the development of weather at low latitudes. In this context, he provided valuable working rules for weather analysis in regions of sparse data; short period fluctuations in rainfall generated by the summer monsoon. He was on the earliest to suggest a link between the formation of depression in the Bay of Bengal and the westward movement of tropical cyclones across China; Interactions between weather systems lying on both sides of the equator; prospects of long and medium range weather prediction over India. His main interest in geomagnetism laid in the following areas: analysis of data to detect transient fluctuations; solar flares, cosmic rays and radio fadeouts; fluctuations in the intensity of cosmic rays and associated geomagnetic variables; microseisms and submarines structures; oceanography of the mixed layer.

Other Contributions: Malurkar served as Member, Executive Committee, Association of Atmospheric Electricity and Terrestrial Magnetism, International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics; and Indian National Committee, International Geophysical Year (1957-58).
