Raghu Raj Bahadur completed his PhD (1950) at University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in the area of Mathematical Statistics. He held academic positions at the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata, Department of Statistics, University of Chicago, Columbia University, Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi.

Academic and Research Achievements: Bahadur made important contributions to several areas of theoretical statistics. These included selection and ranking, sufficient statistics, unbiased estimation, sequential analysis, large deviations and large sample theories of estimation and significance testing.

Other Contributions: As an author and editor Raghu Raj Bahadur contributed more than 10 chapters to standard books including one on 'Hodges Superefficiency' to 'Encyclopaedia of Statistical Sciences' (John Wiley, 1980); He was associate editor of the Annals of Mathematics and Statistics and Chairman of the Editorial board of the prestigious IMS-University of Chicago Monograph Series (1977).

Awards and Honours: RR Bahadur was a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore, the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (President, 1974-75) and American Academy of Arts and Sciences as well as Member, International Statistical Institute and Council, Indian Statistical Institute (1972-74). He held the John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship (1968-69) and the Wald Lecturership at the Institute of Mathematical Statistics.
