Summary

Kollagunta Gopala Iyer Ramanathan did PhD (1951) from Princeton University, USA. He worked as Senior Professor, School of Mathematics, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Bombay; and later Nehru Fellow (1971-73).

Academic and Research Achievements: Working in the areas `algebra’ and `theory of numbers’, Ramanathan earned international repute for his work on analytic theory of quadratic forms, modular functions and discontinuous groups. He did extensive work on Ramanujan’s manuscript and Einstein series. The work he did on automorphic functions related to Siegel formula is a seminal contribution to analytic number theory.

Other Contributions: Ramanathan was on the Editorial Board of Acta Arithmetica; and also Member of the Indian Mathematical Society and INSA Council (1974-76).

Awards and Honours: Professor Ramanathan was conferred many prizes, notably SS Bhatnagar Prize (1965); UGC National Lecturer (1965); Homi J Bhabha Medal by INSA (1984); and Padma Bhushan (1983). He was Fellow, Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore; and Foundation Fellow, Maharashtra Academy of Sciences.
