Jyoti Bhushan Chatterjea earned his MB (1942) and MD (1949) from the University of Calcutta. His areas of specialization were medical science and biochemistry. He was Professor and Head, Department of Haematology and Director, School of Tropical Medicine, Kolkata.

Academic and Research Achievements: Chatterjea made significant contributions to the aetiopathogenetic aspects of common disorders of human red blood cells and unfolded the spectrum of hereditary disorders of human haemoglobin in India. He studied the role of iron, folic acid; vitamin B12 and conjugate foliate compounds in the human system. The discovery of HbE in Bengal and his studies of HbE thalassaemia diseases from clinical haematological, biochemical, biophysical and the genetical aspects provided exciting new information to the medical world. Besides, his contributions to the aetiopathogenesis of nutritional anaemias and the enzymes playing their part and their eradication are of great value.

Other Contributions: Chatterjea was Counsellor, International Society of Haematology (sometime Vice-President), International Society of Blood Transfusion; Asian and Pacific Society of Haematology; and International Reticulo Endothelial Society.

Awards and Honours: Chatterjea received Coates Medal of University of Calcutta (1958); Barclay Medal of Asiatic Society (1963); Basanti Devi Amirchand Prize (1964); Minto Gold Medal; and SS Bhatnagar Prize (1966). He was a Fellow of National Academy of Medical Sciences (India); American College of Physicians; Royal College of Pathologists (London); Swiss Society of Haematology; German Society of Haemotology; Indian Society of Haematology (President 1963, 1964); Indian Association of Pathologists (President, 1968); Indian Anthropological Society (President, 1967-68) and Indian Public Health Association (sometime President).
