Austin Manindra Nath Ghosh obtained his BSc (Hons) degree from the University of London, UK. His specialization was in physical chemistry and electrochemistry. He was an Associate of the Royal College of Science, London and also served the Geological Survey of India (1928). He was Director, Oil and Natural Gas Directorate (1955) and a Technical Director and Oil Adviser to the Government of India (1956).

Academic and Research Achievements: Ghosh carried out field geological work in the Salt Range of West Punjab, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Assam. In Assam, he worked out, in detail, the stratigraphy of the Cherra sandstone series. Working in the Garo, Khasi and Jaintia Hills, he concluded that the older rocks of the area were subject to conditions of great heat and uniform pressure. In the Garo Hills, he discovered a reserve of 140 million tons of coal. Ghosh carried out an investigation for natural gas in Mymensingh district and discovered new localities of fossilized remains of dinosaurs in Jabalpur and Rewa. During fieldwork in Sikkim, he discovered the cause of the inversion of the metamorphic sequence there which, he concluded, resulted from gigantic overfolds. He was also credited with the discovery of coal in Western Sikkim. His knowledge of geology of India was of much use in locating oil in Lunej and Ankleshwar and elsewhere. Under his guidance, a sizable quantity of natural gas was located in the submontane tract of the Himalayan region and in the Jwalamukhi area.
