Nandalal Ghosh obtained his DPhil (1951) from the University of Calcutta and was awarded a DSc (hc) from the University of Burdwan. His specialization was in fluid mechanics. He was Professor and Head, Department of Mathematics, Presidency College, Kolkata (1951-65); Professor and Head, Post-graduate Department of Mathematics, University of Burdwan (1965-72) and UGC Research Professor (1972-76).
Academic and Research Achievements: Ghosh studied the problem of equilibrium under self-gravitation with variable density and angular velocity. He also studied the problems of resistance in real fluid flows by obtaining exact solutions in different bodies like spheres and spheroids. Ghosh derived a new system of equations of motion in any continuous medium directly from the principles of classical mechanics.
Awards and Honours: Professor Ghosh was recipient of NR Sen Memorial Lecture Award (1973). He was a Member of Calcutta Mathematical Society and also became its President (1975).
