Bal Krishnan Anand obtained his MD (1948) from Panjab University and DSc (hc) degree (1983) from Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. His specialization was in physiology (neurophysiology) and medical education. He was Professor and Head of Physiology, Lady Hardings Medical College (1949-56), New Delhi; Professor and Head of Physiology (1957-74), and Dean (1969-74), All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS), New Delhi; Commonwealth Visiting Professor, University of London (1966); Visiting Professor, Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Philadelphia (1968); Assistant Director, Health, Manpower Development, WHO, South-East Asia Region (1974-77); Emeritus Professor, AIIMS (1977-82); and Director, Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences, Srinagar (1982-85).

Academic and Research Achievements: Anand was the first to describe the presence of a 'feeding centre' and a 'Satiety Centre' in the hypothalamic region of brain in 1951. Later he made extensive studies to establish the mechanisms involved in their regulation of feeding behaviour. He established the regulation of various visceral responses from the limloic system of brain linking emotional behaviour with these responses, which explained certain psychosomatic disorders. Anand studied the hypothalamic regulation of some endocrinal responses, especially, those involved in reproductive behaviour. He pioneered investigations on meditative 'yogis', especially, on their central nervous responses. He contributed some chapters to books on neurophysiology.

Other Contributions: Anand was a Member, Indian Association of Advanced Medical Education (sometime President). He served on the Editorial Boards of many journals. He was President, National Board of Examinations; Member of Executive Councils of IUPS (1959-74), and International Brain Research Organization (1961-74); Honorary Consultant of Defence Minister for Altitude Acclimatization Studies (1963-74); and Chairman, Postgraduate Medical Education Committee of Medical Council of India (1981-91).

Awards and Honours: Anand was a recipient of Col Amir Chand Prize of ICMR (1955, 1962); GJ Watumull Memorial Award (1961); SS Bhatanagar Prize (1963); Silver Jubilee Award by Medical Council of India (1969); BC Roy Award (1984); and Padma Shri (1969). He was a Fellow of National Academy of Medical Sciences, India (sometime President), and Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore.
