Summary

Binod Bihari Roy obtained DSc (Physiology) (1960) and DSc (Experimental Surgery) (1966) from University of Calcutta. He worked as Professor and Head, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and also Head, Department of Experimental Surgery, RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata.

Academic and Research Achievements: Roy studied adrenocortical response in some surgical and experimental conditions. His most important researches were on hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal-axis in stress from man down to lower vertebrates up to fish, and their mechanisms of adaptation to environment. Roy’s researches are embodied in two publications: Neuroendocrinological Studies in Stress (1976) and Comparative Aspects of the Pituitary Gland (1982), both published by the University of Calcutta.

Other Contributions: Dr Roy was a Life Member of the Association of Surgeons of India; and Member of the Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons of India.

Awards and Honours: Dr Roy was recipient of Coates Gold Medal by University of Calcutta (1963); Nilratan Brahmachari Gold Medal (1975); Lady Brahmachari Lectureship (1975); and Suhasini Das Gold Medal (1978).
