Summary

Satyendra Nath Ghosh obtained his DSc degree in Physics from Calcutta University. Because of his high quality thesis, the examiners of which were Professors EV Appleton, Nobel Laureate, S Chapman, FRS and Saloange, he was exempted from appearing for lower doctorate, the PhD degree. He worked under the supervision of Professor Meghnad Saha, PC Mahalanobis, Satyendra Nath Bose and Sisir Kumar Mitra. He held distinguished scholarship, such as Adir Dutt Research Scholarship and was ICI Research Fellow; Post-doctorate Research Fellow, Duke University; Scientist, Wentworth Institute; Post-doctorate Fellow, Harvard University; and Scientist, Geophysical Research Centre, USA. He was appointed as Reader of Applied Physics and Head of the Department, JK Institute of Applied Physics; Head, Department of Physics, Allahabad University; Visiting Professor, Aerospace Engineering University of Michigan; Senior Professor, Department of Electronics and Communication; Dean, Faculty of Science, Allahabad University and Sir Rashbehari Ghose Professor of Applied Physics, Calcutta University. Ghosh was INSA Senior Scientist during 1985-87.

Academic and Research Achievements: Ghosh’s studies focused mainly on Applied Physics, Communication, Space Science and Microwave Spectroscopy. He published about 250 research papers in peer reviewed journals. His papers were published in eight volumes and ten high standard books were published by eminent Indian and Foreign Publishers. About 30 students obtained PhD and DSc degrees under his guidance.

Other Contributions: Professor SN Ghosh was Vice-President of National Science Academy of India, Indian Cryogenic Society and West Bengal Science Academy. He was also a Member of UP Technical Development Board. He was Additional Member of INSA Council (1972-73). He became Trustee of Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science, Kolkata.

Awards and Honours: Professor Ghosh was recipient of Sampuranand Prize of National Academy of Sciences (India), Allahabad. He was President of Engineering and Metallurgy Section of Indian Science Congress and President of Physical Section of National Academy of Science. A Lecture Hall is set up in Allahabad University in his name and a lecture known as ‘Professor SN Ghosh Lecture’ is given by Eminent Scientists every year at Allahabad.
