Keshavrao Krishnarao Datey obtained his MD in Medical Science in 1950 from the University of Bombay, specializing in cardiology. He served as the Director, Department of Cardiology, Medical Research Centre, Bombay Hospital and Professor Emeritus, St. George’s Hospital, Mumbai. He was also Professor and Director of the Department of Cardiology in GS Medical College and KEM Hospital, Mumbai.

Academic and Research Achievements: Datey was a pioneer medical scientist in India having contributed a great deal to the science and technology associated with cardiac problems. Also a pioneer in intensive coronary case, he was the first to demonstrate the value of shavasan and biofeedback and other self-regulation techniques in the management of hypertension.

Other Contributions: Datey established the first Intensive Coronary Care Unit in India at the KEM Hospital, Bombay. He edited two journals, Cardiology, and the Indian Practitioner.

Awards and Honours: Keshavrao Krishnarao Datey received the BC Roy National Award (1971) and the title of Honorary Brigadier (1975), the Chaturvedi Kalawati Jagmohandas Memorial Award of the ICMR. He was appointed Physician to the President of India and Honorary Physician to the Governor of Maharashtra. He was honoured with the Padma Bhushan (1969) and the Dhanvantari Award (1979). He was a Member and Fellow at the Royal College of Physicians (London), American College of Cardiologists (USA), Association of Medical Scientists (India), National College of Cardiologists and Physicians and American Academy for Biological Sciences, as well as the International Cardiologists Association (USA), Royal College of Physicians (Edinburgh), American College of Chest Physicians. He was bestowed with Honorary Fellowship at the British Cardiac Society; Cardiological Society of Belgium, International Society of International Medicine, Aero-Medical Society of India and Philippine College of Cardiology.
