Summary

Padmanabhan Subbarao Krishnan obtained his PhD degree (1947) from the Cornell University, USA. His area of specialization was biochemistry. He was Emeritus Professor, Department of Botany, Calicut University; Professor and Head, Department of Biochemistry, University of Lucknow; and Scientist, National Chemical Laboratory, Pune (1949-56).

Academic and Research Achievements: Krishnan contributed on most of the major systems, such as plants, animals and microorganisms. His major work on animal tissues includes enzyme induction and allosterism, with special reference to enzymes of purine/pyrimidine metabolism. His research on the biochemistry of angiospermic parasites is significant.

Other Contributions: Krishnan contributed two chapters to standard works: 'Methods in Enzymology' (Vol.1) and 'Modern Methods of Plant Analysis' (Springer-Verlag, 1964).

Awards and Honours: Krishnan was a Fellow of Royal Institute of Chemistry (London). He was a Member of Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Xi, Society of Plant Physiologists (USA), Biochemical Society (London), Scandinavian Society of Plant Physiology, and Biological Association of India.
