Ramesh Chandra Misra obtained his PhD (1944) from University of Lucknow specializing in himalayan geology, economic geology and Petrology. He served as the Dean, Faculty of Science, University of Lucknow and President, Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology.

Academic and Research Achievements: Misra discovered, at Bundelkhand, the existence of minerals pyrophyllite and diaspore, of great economic importance in refractory, glass and ceramic industries, previously not found in India. These are being mined now. He suggested, for the first time, Rihand dam as a site for aluminium production, and sites for cement factories in Mirzapur Distt. (Uttar Pradesh). These were formerly known to exist only in the Salt Range, Pakistan. He discovered a volcanic bomb from agglomeratic slates of Kashmir. Contributed to the geology and stratigraphy of the Kumaon Himalayas and worked extensively on economic mineral deposits such as glass sands, copper and iron in the Kumaon Himalayas.

Other Contributions: Member, National Committee for International Geology Correlation Programme. He was Member, INSA Council (1980-82).

Awards and Honours: Misra served as the President, Geology and Geography Section, Indian Science Congress (1969). He was a Fellow National Academy of Sciences (India), Allahabad, Geological Society of India, and Palaeobotanical Society.
