Samarendra Nath Biswas obtained his DPhil degree (1951) from the University of Calcutta and PhD degree (1958) from the Adelaide University, Australia. His area of specialization was Theoretical Physics. He was a Fellow, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai (1958-64); Dean and Professor of Physics, Centre for Advanced Study in Physics, Department of Physics, University of Delhi (1969-91); and Dean, School of Environmental Science, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi (1974-76).

Academic and Research Achievements: Biswas did his early works on particle classification spectrum, and experimental consequences of particle interaction based on unitary symmetry and its relativistic generalization. He carried out dispersion relation studies on collision process involving elementary particles based on unitarity and analyticity. He concentrated on geometrical phases of wave function in quantum mechanics and their application. His achievement concerned the development of supersymmetric classical mechanics, a topic which dominated the world of field theory. In the field of statistical mechanics he studied extensively the role of parastatistics.

Other Contributions: Biswas served on the Editorial Board of Indian Journal of Pure and Applied Physics.

Awards and Honours: Dr Biswas was UGC National Lecturer (1974) and a Senior Associate Member of International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Trieste (1976-81). He was a Fellow of Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore and National Academy of Sciences (India), Allahabad.
