Summary

Narendra Chandra Pant received PhD (1960) from University of London, UK. He was Professor and (later) Head, Entomology Division, Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) (1956-57); and also Director, Commonwealth Institute of Entomology, London (1977).

Academic and Research Achievements: Pant’s research contributed to our understanding of insect nutrition, insect-microbes symbiosis and insect-plant relationship. His work shed light on the function of intra-cytoplasmic microorganisms in several insect species. He showed that in certain beetles, yeast-like microorganisms supply at least six factors of vitamin B complex, essential amino acids and sterols.

Other Contributions: Pant edited two books: Economic Entomology and Insect Anatomy and Physiology. He was Chief Editor of Indian Journal of Entomology and Bulletin of Entomological Research and Editor of the Review of Applied Entomology (Series A & B).

Awards and Honours: Professor Pant was elected Fellow of the Entomological Society of India (President, 1971-72), Royal Entomological Society, London, and Institute of Biology, London.
