Supriya Roy earned the BSc (Hons) (1950), MSc (Geology) (1952), DPhil (1957), and DSc (1963), all from Calcutta University. He worked in the Mineralogy Division of the Geological Survey of Canada as postdoctoral fellow with RW Boyle (1958-59) and worked on Pb-Zn-Ag-Cu deposits of Bathurst-Newcastle district, New Brunswick. This work was published as Bulletin No. 72 of the Geological Survey of Canada in 1961. He served in various capacities in the Department of Geological Sciences, Jadavpur University (1959-96) as INSA Senior Scientist (1996-2001), and Professor Emeritus since.

Academic and Research Achievements: Roy has deep interest in ore geology and metallogeny in the backdrop of the evolving Earth System through geological time. He carried out a comprehensive genetic analysis of the manganese deposits of India and abroad, recognizing their pristine depositional environments controlled largely by the effects of tectonically related sea-level and climate changes. The genetic models of sedimentary manganese deposits proposed by Roy were internationally acclaimed. He extended his studies to deep-sea manganese nodules and crusts, thereby covering the entire panorama of manganese deposition. He has authored two books, viz. Syngenetic Manganese Formations of India (Jadavpur University, 1966); and Manganese Deposits (Academic Press, London, 1981), (translated into Russian, MIR Publisher, Moscow, 1986). In addition, he has one monograph, five chapters in books and 65 research papers to his credit. He also mentored many MSc, PhD and postdoctoral students.

Other Contributions: Roy has been Chairman of the UGC Geoscience Panel (1980-82), and Research Council of National Institute of Oceanography, Goa (1989-91). He was President, Commission on Manganese, International Association on the Genesis of Ore Deposits (IAGOD) (1990-94). He was Global Leader of UNESCO-IGCP Project Nos 111 & 226 (1978-90) on the genesis of manganese deposits. He served as Member of the INSA Council (1979-81).

Awards and Honours: Professor Roy was conferred the SL Biswas Medal (1962) and PN Bose Medal of the Asiatic Society (2002), Krishnan Medal of Indian Geophysical Union (1969), National Mineral Award (1969), S Narayanaswami Award of the Geological Society of India (1982), LL Fermor Lecturer, The Geological Society, London (1994), and DN Wadia Medal of INSA (1998). He was elected Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore (1986).
