Summary

Bangalore Inamti Sundararaj did his PhD (1958) from University of Mysore and another PhD (1960) from Tulane University. He served as Professor, Department of Zoology, University of Delhi, Delhi.

Academic and Research Achievements: Sundararaj was deeply interested in zoology and endocrinology. He investigated the environmental and endocrine regulation of most aspects of reproduction on the catifish, Heteropneustes fossilis. As a result, catfish is considered to be one of the most comprehensively studied teleost fish models in the world. His work is not only basic but has applications in aquaculture.

Other Contributions: Sundararaj served as Member of the European Society for Comparative Endocrinology, American Society of Zoologists, American Association of Anatomists, American Fisheries Society, and International Society of Chronobiology; and was also on the Editorial boards of Chronobiol, General and Comparative Endocrinology.

Awards and Honours: Professor Sundararaj won the Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Memorial Prize (1974-75); UGC National Lecture (1978-79); SL Hora Memorial Medal by Indian Society of Ichthyologists (1981); and was Full Member, Tulane Chapter, Sigma Xi (1959).
