Summary

Jamshedji Jijibhoy Chinoy obtained his PhD degree (1935) from the University of London, UK. His specialization was in plant physiology and agricultural botany. He was Reader, Department of Botany, University of Delhi (1947-59); Professor and Head (1959-62), Botany Department and Director (1962-75), University School of Sciences and Professor Emeritus (1975-78), Gujarat University, Ahmedabad.

Academic and Research Achievements: Chinoy's findings on the role of ascorbic acid in plant growth won him international fame. He worked on a variety of research topics in physiology which included (i) correlations between growth, metabolism, development and crop yield, (ii) energy requirement of crop plants, physiology of inheritance and selection of high-yielding varieties on the basis of flowering time, (iii) classification of wheat varieties on the basis of their pre-sowing hardening treatment of seed for inducing resistance to drought and salinity, (iv) correlations between intensity of rust infection and temperature and its bearing upon yield and 1000 kernel weight of wheat and (v) physiology of flowering, role of auxin and gibberellin in the synthesis of ascorbic acid (AA) including the role of AA in crop production.

Other Contributions: At the Gujarat University, Chinoy helped established a strong school of Plant Physiology.

Awards and Honours: Chinoy received Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Memorial Prize (1975). He was President, Physiology Section of IX International Botanical Congress, Montreal (1963).
