Summary

Virendra Singh obtained BSc and MSc degrees from Agra University. Thereafter, he joined Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai (1957). He was deputed to the University of California at Berkeley (1959-62) where he completed his PhD degree with Geoffrey Chew. He then spent a year each at Caltech and the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton and returned to TIFR (1964) where he became Full Professor (1970), Senior Professor (1981), Professor of Eminence (1990) and also worked as its Director (1987-97). He spent two years at Rockefeller University, New York as Visiting Faculty. He formally retired from TIFR (2003) and continued there as INSA CV Raman Research Professor till 2008.

Academic and Research Achievements: Singh has made pioneering contributions in theoretical high energy physics, including: Coulomb scattering amplitude analyticity, analysis of high energy pion nucleon scattering, Reggisation of elementary particles in field theory, Gupta-Singh coupling constant sum rule in Unitary Symmetry, Beg-Singh SU (6) mass formula, Lie group analysis of strong coupling theory, discovery of fixed poles in current algebra amplitudes, Singh-Pais theorems on low energy Compton Scattering, Singh-Roy bounds on high energy scattering amplitudes and charge exchange cross sections. In mathematical physics, Singh carried out important investigations on fractional charge, and Aharonov-Bohm effect and obtained new string theories obeying different boundary conditions. His work on Sextic oscillator triggered a large number of investigations on quasi-solvable potentials. In the area of foundation of quantum mechanics, Bell's seminal work on hidden variable theories was extended in important directions involving essentially newer tests for two particle correlation experiments, for multi particle systems and for stochastic non-contextual theories. A new concept for Signal Locality was also formulated. A casual description of quantum mechanics which is 'maximally' realistic was proposed. New phase space Bell's inequalities were obtained and used to derive (N+1) marginal theorem for 2N dimensional phase space.

Other Contributions: Along with Udgaonkar, Singh established a strong theoretical physics group at TIFR. He was Chairman of Board of Research in Nuclear Science of the Department of Atomic Energy (1986-93) and served on Commission on Particles and Fields of IUPAP (1987-93). He was also INSA Council Member (1977-82).

Awards and Honours: Professor Singh won the SS Bhatnagar Prize (1973), Saha Award for Research in Theoretical Sciences (1979), Goyal Prize for Physical Sciences (1995), Saha Award by National Academy of Sciences (India), Allahabad (1996), and Raman Birth Centenary Gold Medal (1996). He was elected Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore in 1970, National Academy of Sciences (India), Allahabad in 1989, and the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS) in 1999.
