Summary

Tarit Kumar Ghosh earned his MD degree (1944) from the University of Calcutta. His areas of specialization were medical science and neurology. He was Consultant Neurologist, Vivekananda Institute of Medical Sciences, Ramakrishna Mission Seva Pratishtan, Kolkata; Professor and Head, Department of Neurology, University College of Medicine, University of Calcutta and then Director and Head, Department of Neurology, Institute of Post-Graduate Medical Education and Research, Bangur Institute of Neurology, Kolkata.

Academic and Research Achievements: Ghosh observed, for the first time perhaps, increased arteriolar dilation in epidemic dropsy and sleep vasoconstriction in congestive cardiac failure. Ghosh analysed information from 500 epileptics and conducted a follow-up of over 17,000 patients to highlight the adverse effect of delayed treatment, of low income and of insufficient medication. Designated as National Investigator by ICMR, Ghosh made an extensive study of epilepsy. His studies suggested that no epileptic father begot an epileptic child, but epileptic mother had epileptic children.

Awards and Honours: Ghosh was conferred with Ronaki Ross Oration (1981). He was a Fellow of National Academy of Medical Sciences (India) and International Medical Sciences Association (India). He was also an Honorary Member of Neurological Society of India (Sometime President).
