Summary

Krhitindramohan Naha obtained DSc (1959) from University of Calcutta specializing in structural and metamorphic geology and precambrian geology. He served as the Professor of Geology and later CSIR Emeritus Scientist, Department of Geology & Geophysics at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. Naha was also Visiting Professor, University of California at Berkeley (1968) and Senior Lecturer, La Trobe University of Victoria (1975-76).

Academic and Research Achievements:Naha’s contributions relate to: (i) time of formation and kinematic significance of deformation lamellae in quartz; (ii) geometry of reclined folds; (iii) large-scale architecture of migmatites; (iv) metamorphism in relation to stratigraphy, structure and movements in eastern Singhbhum and the Simla Himalayas; (v) revision of stratigraphy and structure in the Early Precambrian terrance of central Rajasthan and southern India; (vi) methods of recognizing angular run conformity in metamorphic terraces, with groups of rocks on either side of the unconformity involved in superposed folding; and (vii) methods of recognizing coaxial refolding prior to non- coaxial deformation.

Others Contributions:Naha was the Chairman, Indian National Committee on Continental Lithosphere and Member, editorial boards of: Indian Journal of Earth Science, Indian Journal of Geology and Precambrian Research. He was Member, INSA Council (1990-92)

Awards and Honours:Naha was the recipient of SL Biswas Medal (Asiatic Society) (1958); National Mineral Award (1970); Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize (1972); UGC National Lecturer (1978-79); Jawaharlal Nehru Fellow (1986-87); Professor KP Rode Memorial Lecture (Indian Science Congress) (1992); Professor HC Dasgupta Memorial Lecture (Geological, Mining & Metallurgical Society of India) (1992); Dr S Balakrishna Memorial Lecture (Andhra Pradesh Academy of Sciences) (1992). He was a Fellow, Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore; Life Fellow, Geological, Mining and Metallurgical Society of India (also Council Member), Geological Society of India (also Council Member).

The Indian National Science Academy has instituted the ‘Professor K Naha Memorial Medal’ in his honour.
