Summary

LKI Ramachandran obtained PhD (1953) from University of Madras. He held various Faculty positions in the universities of Madras, Iowa, California, Hawaii and Osmania and Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. He also remained Professor in the Department of Biochemistry, Osmania University, Hyderabad.

Academic and Research Achievements: Ramachandran advanced our knowledge of the structure of tobacco virus protein, protein iodine interactions, and toxic and other amino acids in the Lathyrus species of plants. He also developed techniques for chemical modifications of proteins. The other pieces of research to which he made significant contributions are structure - activity correlations in peptide antibiotics and toxins of venoms.

Other Contributions: Professor Ramachandran served on the Editorial boards of Indian Journal of Biochemistry & Biophysics and Biochemical Education. He was also Member of the Society of Biological Chemists, India; Alpha Chi Sigma; American Chemical Society; New York Academy of Sciences; and Sigma Xi.

Awards and Honours: Professor Ramachandran was conferred PS Sarma Memorial Award by Society of Biological Chemists, India (1973); Sir JC Bose Award by UGC (1978); and Andhra Pradesh State Silver Jubilee Year Teacher Award (1981).
