Summary

Lakshminarayanapuram Ramier Vaidyanath did his BSc (Metallurgy) from Banaras Hindu University (BHU), and PhD (Industrial Metallurgy) from University of Birmingham, UK. He also obtained Diploma (3-Tier Course in Management) from Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. He had been associated with the Indian Copper Information Centre, Kolkata (1966- ), redesignated as Indian Copper Development Centre in 1986, where he was a President. He had rich expertise in the development of copper industry and had more than 48 years of industrial and research experience.

Academic and Research Achievements: Vaidyanath did researches on metal working while at the National Metallurgical Laboratory, Jamshedpur. At the University of Birmingham, he researched on solid phase bonding of metals relevant to atomic energy applications. As an Officer on Special Duty (R&D), Khandelwal Ferro Alloys Ltd., Nagpur, he was involved in R&D on fluxless process smelting and reduction in energy consumption, etc. While at Kolkata, he was closely associated with copper and copper alloy industries in India and abroad. He had interaction with many research and development organizations on the subject in the overseas and this interaction has helped the Indian industries in adopting newer technologies for operations and diversification.

Other Contributions: Vaidyanath was the Head of the Copper and Copper Alloys Sub-Committee of the Bureau of Indian Standards and contributed significantly in establishing proper standards in the field of copper and its alloys. Along with MVNR Seshagiri Rao he prepared a report on Copper in India – Survey, Analysis and Outlook on behalf of Bureau of Industrial Costs and Prices, Department of Industrial Development, Government of India. He served as Member, Planning Group for Non-Ferrous Metals in India, Government of India, and Chairman of Copper and Copper Alloy Sub-committee, Bureau of Indian Standards, New Delhi.

Awards and Honours: Dr Vaidyanath was bestowed Sir William Larke Medal, UK, Tata Gold Medal, Bralco Gold Medal, Platinum Metal by Indian Institute of Metals, Distinguished Alumnus Award by the Department of Metallurgical Engineering, BHU, and the Life Time Achievement Award by Indian Non-Ferrous Metal Manufacturers’ Association. He was elected Fellow of the Institution of Materials, UK, ASM International, USA (formerly American Society of Metals); and President, Indian Institute of Metals (Honorary Member also now).
