Summary

Bakhshish Singh Gill earned his BVSc and MVSc degrees from Punjab University, the latter 'with distinction' and PhD from Agra University. He joined the staff of Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) as protozoologist and worked for sixteen years before moving to Punjab Agricultural University where he worked for 15 years in various capacities, such as Joint Director, Dean Veterinary College and Special Director of Research. Gill trained himself in cytochemistry and histochemistry at IVRI (1952-54), in immunology at Wellcome Laboratories of Tropical Medicine, London (1963-64) and at Wellcome Research Laboratories, Beckenham, England (1977-88). He worked as Scientific Adviser to MSD (Agriculture-Veterinary), London for seven years.

Academic and Research Achievements: Being basically a veterinarian, Dr Gill devoted thirty one years to research on biology and control of parasites of economic importance, namely, Cocidia, Trypanosome and Theileria on which he published over one hundred original research papers. He also published ten research papers on other veterinary diseases including parasitic gastro-enteritis and enzootic calcinosis of sheep. Gill documented the first authentic record of malignant catarrhal fever of cattle and buffalo in India. His research has been highly commended by expert bodies, such as FAC/UN, Indian Council of Agriculture Research, Edinburgh University and Australian Research Institute, Brisbane.

Awards and Honours: Dr Gill was winner of a competitive Punjab Government Merit Scholarship. He also received Research Fellowships of Nuffield Foundation, London and Royal Society of London.
