Padam Chand Jain earned his BA (Hons) in Mathematics and MA (Maths) degrees from Delhi University, after which he joined Hindu College, Delhi University, as a Lecturer (1951). He obtained his PhD degree from Delhi University on 'Statistical Theory of Turbulence' under the supervision of FC Auluck. He worked as a Visiting Professor of Mathematics (1963-65) at Maths Research Centre, University of Wisconsin, jointly with Don Greespan, M Kawaguti and Ben Noble. On returning to India, he worked as a Professor of Applied Mathematics at BITS, Pilani, Rajasthan before joining IIT-B, Mumbai as Professor of Mathematics in 1966.
Academic and Research Achievements: Dr Jain worked in the area of computational methods for solving the Navier-Stokes equation. This work resulted in developing computational-oriented new algorithms for solving non-liner partial differential equations arising in the general area of computational fluid mechanics. He developed new algorithms for solving highly non-liner convective-reaction-diffusion equation (including Burgers' equation) at high Reynolds numbers. He also regularized long-wave equation for studying the development of an undular bore for initial gentle and steep slopes, quasi-linear hyperbolic system of equations in non-conservative form and cubic-spline techniques for solving such equations. Dr Jain published sixty research papers in peer-reviewed journals and sixteen students completed their PhD Theses under his supervision.
Other Contributions: Jain served the Indian Mathematical Society as its Honorary Secretary for 5 years. He is a member of Indian Science Congress and Indian Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics. He organized an International Conference on Optimization in Statistics at IIT-B, Mumbai (1977).
Awards and Honours: Jain received the SS Bhatnagar Prize (1977) and was elected a Fellow of Maharashtra Academy of Sciences, Pune (1977) and National Academy of Sciences (India), Allahabad (1978). He is a Life Member of Indian Mathematical Society. |
