Ratan Nadirshaw Sukheswala obtained PhD (1938) from University of Bombay. He was Professor and Head, and also Professor Emeritus later, Geology Department, St Xavier’s College, Mumbai.
Academic and Research Achievements: Sukheswala worked on the Deccan Trap rocks. He was the first to discover carbonatite alkaline rocks in India.
Other Contributions: Sukheswala served as Corresponding Member, Subcommission on Systematics of Igneous Rocks, IUGS; and was Member, Indian National Committee for International Geological Correlation Programme.
Awards and Honours: Professor Sukheswala was awarded Pramatha Nath Bose Memorial Medal by the Asiatic Society (1978). He was elected Fellow of the Geological Society of India; Indian Society of Earth Sciences; Geological, Mining and Metallurgical Society of India (sometime Vice-President); Earth Science Society of India (sometime President); and Maharashtra Academy of Sciences
