Summary

Hirendra Chandra Gangulee obtained his DSc degree (1965) from the University of Calcutta. His areas of specialization were bryology, genetics and plant breeding. He was the Professor and Head, Department of Botany, Darjeeling Government College (1962-63); Professor, Presidency College, Kolkata (1963-72) and Professor, Department of Botany, University of Calcutta.

Academic and Research Achievements: Working on rice genetics, Gangulee found that aman rice is a distinct photoperiodic group of indica rice. He introduced hot-water emasculation for the first time in India and studied taxonomy and cytology of Indian mosses.

Other Contributions: Gangulee published a monograph, namely, Mosses of Eastern India and Adjacent Regions (1980).

Awards and Honours: Gangulee was a member of Bryological Societies of many countries.
