Mihir Kumar Bose obtained the BSc (Hons) and MSc from Calcutta University for which he received awards and medal from the University. He joined the Department of Geology, Presidency College in 1956 as Lecturer and worked there on magmatic rock complexes around Koraput, Orissa, under the supervision of Professor S Ray and obtained his PhD (1965). Subsequently, he was a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Oslo with renowned T F W Barth. He carried out intensive petrological-mineralogical research in Norway and on several magmatic suites from the Eastern Ghats. He retired in 1992 from the Presidency College as Reader in Geology, having been engaged in teaching and research for about five decades. Subsequently, he was Emeritus Scientist, CSIR, New Delhi (1993-97), and INSA Honorary Scientist (2001-04).

Academic and Research Achievements: Dr Bose initiated novel studies on petrology, minerology and structural history of a number of magmatic complexes and Deccan volcanic province of the Indian shield. He made fundamental contributions in understanding the evolution of the Indian shield, particularly the checkered tectonomagmatic history of the country. He introduced innovative research on application of geochemical tools to establish tectonic setting of magmatism. Both, the intensive and extensive investigations by Dr Bose on alkaline igneous complexes marked a turning point in petrological studies in this country. He is the author of text 'Igneous Petrology' published by the World Press.

Other Contributions: Mihir Bose served as a member of the Subcommission on Systematics and Nomenclature of Igneous Rocks, instituted by International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS), Canada. He was member of National Committee on Science and Technology (NCST), Editor (1972-79) of the Indian Journal of Earth Sciences, and was President (2004-06) of the Geological Mining and Metallurgical Society of India. He was also the Vice-President of the Indian Association of Geochemists, Varanasi.

Awards and Honours: Dr Bose was awarded the SS Bhatnagar Prize in Earth Sciences (1976), PN Bose Memorial Gold Medal (2006) from the Asiatic Society, and the National Mineral Award (1972). He was a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore and the Geological Society of India, Bangalore.
