Summary

Nripendra Chandra Ganguli obtained his DSc degree (1956) from the University of Calcutta. His areas of specializations were biochemistry and dairy chemistry. He was Professor of Eminence and In-charge, National Research Centre on Dairy Chemistry; Director and Head Division of Dairy Chemistry; and Principal, Dairy Science College, all at National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal.

Academic and Research Achievements: Ganguli’s researches relate to milk proteins and allied areas as well as semen-chemistry, biochemistry and preservation. He has worked on biosynthesis of ascorbic acid in rats and of sucrose and shikimic acid in plants. His work also includes: development of analytical techniques like paper chromatography; paper electrophoresis and radio autography; structure and function of casein and its fractions; formulation of infant food through appropriate chemical and biochemical tailoring to simulate human milk; and new extender for preservation and freezing of buffalo semen. He has written a monograph, namely, Milk Proteins (ICAR, 1973) and a book Semen Technology (INSA, 1984).

Other Contributions: Ganguli had served as Member, Diary Science Panel on Diary Education (FAO) and International Diary Federation, Group D2 E14, Brussels, and represented India in FAO/WHO Codex Meeting (Rome, 1972). He was Chief Editor of Indian Diary Association; and Member of Editorial Boards of: Newzealand Journal of Dairy Science and Technology (1978), Indian Journal of Animal Science and Indian Journal of Dairy Science.

Awards and Honours: Ganguli was conferred BC Guha Memorial Lecture of University of Calcutta (1978). Ganguli is a recipient of Professor SC Roy Commemoration Medal (1982); Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Memorial Prize of ICAR (1987); P Bhattacharya Memorial Prize and Lecture Award (1988); and CSIRO (Australia) Diary Research Jubilee Award (1990). He was a Fellow of National Academy of Agricultural Sciences, New Delhi; Indian Chemical Society; Institution of Chemists (India); and Member, Sigma Xi (California Chapter) of Agricultural Chemists.
