Sardul Singh Guraya obtained his PhD (1959) and DSc (1971) from Panjab University, Chandigarh; and a second PhD (1988) (hc) from International University Foundation, USA. His areas of specializations are reproductive physiology, cell and development biology. He was Head, Department of Zoology (1971-86), Dean (1986-90), and Professor of Zoology (1990-92), Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana. He was CSIR Emeritus Scientist (1992-).

Academic and Research Achievements: Guraya’s researches span a wide canvas in cell biology and reproduction. In all his studies, he has tried to relate structure with function in overain and testicular compartments and also to determine the regulatory mechanisms involved as well as the evolutionary significance of reproductive processes, as they pertain to different animal species and the survival of these species. He has highlighted the structural and functional differences between different groups of animals and humans, and also indicated future areas of research. He has authored Biology of Ovarian Follicles in Mammals (Springer-Verlag, 1985), published four more books and contributed chapters to several ones.

Other Contributions: Guraya served as Member of Boards/Committees of several national and international bodies including WHO, UNESCO, ICMR, ICAR, CSIR and UGC. He was Member of Editorial Boards of Journal of Biosciences and Himalayan Journal of Environment and Zoology and Indian Academy of Sciences’ journals. He was Member of INSA Council (1986-88).

Awards and Honours: Guraya is a Fellow of National Academy of Sciences (India), Allahabad and National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (India). He received SS Bhatnagar Prize (1973); UGC National Lectureship (1976-77); Gold Medal at the Sixth International Congress of Animal Reproduction and Artificial Insemination, Paris; PAU Cash Prize (1980); MS Randhawa Award (Best Book Prize); and Basanti Devi Amir Chand Prize of ICMR (1990).
