Ramaiyengar Sridharan did his PhD (1960) from Columbia University, USA specializing in Algebra. He was Professor, Centre for Advanced Study, University of Bombay (1964-67); Visiting Professor, ETH Zurich; Professor, School of Mathematics, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Chennai.
Academic and Research Achievements: After initial work on filtered algebra and related areas, a fundamental theorem of projective geometry for rings, and restricted Line algebras, Sridharan turned his attention to cancellation of projective modules which led to a study of quadratic forms. Most recently, a new invariant was attached to involution and this has become an interesting object of study.
Other Contributions: Sridharan was the Editor, Common Algebra, Journal of Ramanujan Mathematical Society and Journal of Indian Mathematical Society. He was Member, Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) Council and also INSA Council (1990-92) .
Awards and Honours: Sridharan received Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize (1980). He is a Fellow, Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore. |
