Krishnaier Subramanyam did his DSc (1951) from University of Mysore and PhD (1955) from Cornell University, USA. He was Director and Botanical Adviser, Botanical Survey of India, Government of India; and also Retired Teacher (UGC Scheme), Department of Botany, Central College, Bangalore University, Bangalore.
Academic and Research Achievements: Subramanyam worked on taxonomy and floristics including nomenclature of plants; aquatic angiosperms; comparative morphology and systematic and phylogenetic embryology; medicinal weeds and poisonous plants; palynology; cytogenetics and evolution; and endangered species. He authored the monograph Aquatic Angiosperms of India (CSIR, 1962) and contributed a chapter to the book Ecology and Biogeography of India.
Other Contributions: Subramanyam served as Member of the Botanical Society of America, International Association of Plant Taxonomy, Indian Society of Biological Sciences, and Indian Society of Forestry. He was Life Member of the International Society of Plant Morphologists and Botanical Society of Bengal.
Awards and Honours: Dr Subramanyam was conferred Vishwambhar Puri Gold Medal in 1978 by the Indian Botanical Society. He was elected Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore and Indian Botanical Society.
