Jajneswar Das specialized in electronics and telecommunication, earning a DSc degree from the University of Calcutta in 1962. He held the position of Chairman at Webel Electronics Communication Systems Ltd., Kolkata from 1991 to 1998. He was a Visiting Professor, IIT, Kanpur (1982-86). He was the Dean of Sponsored Research and Consultancy (1980-82) and Professor, Department of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering (1962-82) at IIT, Kharagpur, where he was appointed subsequently as Head of Department (1972-80).
Academic and Research Achievements: At the IIT Kharagpur, Das established a school of study and research in digital communication systems including RADA and wideband techniques. This has led to the development of PCM/ADM/low-bit rate codecs and modems, and some of them have been taken up for production by industry. He was also closely associated with the R&D of Defence Reseach and Development Organization and Indian Space Research Organization in the relevant areas. He was a member of the Electronic Commission, Government of India from 1979 to 1981.
Other Contributions: Professor Jajneswar Das co-authored Principles of Digital Communication published in 1985 and Review of Digital Communication, published in 1986. He was also a member of the Editorial Board of Journal of Institution of Electronic and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE).
Awards and Honours: Das was given the NRDC Award in 1976 and the VASVIK Award in 1977. He was honoured with the IETE Silver Jubilee Award in 1978. He was a distinguished Fellow at the IETE where he served as Vice-President from 1982 to 1984. He was a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers (India) and Indian Physical Society, Kolkata. He also presided over the Forum for Interdisciplinary Mathematics from 1980 to 1981.
