Summary

Prosad Kumar Das obtained his DPill (1963) from the University of Calcutta with specialization in dynamic meteorology and numerical modelling. He was Professor of Meteorology, Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, Director-General of Meteorology (1979-83), Senior UNDP Professor of Meteorology, University of Nairobi, Kenya (1983-85), and Emeritus Scientist, CSIR (1990-93).

Academic and Research Achievements: Das specialized in numerical modelling in atmospheric sciences. While studying at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he developed a model for the monsoon circulation for India. Later he developed a model for computing storm surges for the Indian coastline, and made an analytical study of mountain waves behind a circular mountain. He had published two books on monsoons.

Other Contributions: Das was Member of Joint Organizing Committee, WMO-ICSU, for First Global Weather Experiment (1975-79); Member, Executive Committee of WMO (1979-83); and Chairman, National Committee for World Climate Research Programme (1991-94).

Awards and Honours: Das was a Fellow of Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore. He received IMO Award of World Meteorological Organization (1983), KR Ramanathan Memorial Lectureship of Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad (1990), Binapani Dutta Memorial Lectureship of University of Calcutta (1991) and KR Ramanathan Medal of INSA (1993). He was Secretary of INSA (1987-90).
