Kesho Ram Laumas obtained his PhD (1956) from University of Delhi specializing in endocrinology. He served as Professor and Head, Department of Reproductive Biology, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi.

Academic and Research Achievements: Laumas had developed a single silastic implant for long-terms contraception in women and a vaginal ring for female contraception. Investigated in depth the mechanism of action of steroid hormones. Among the protein hormones, human FSH, human placental lactogen, human prolactin and monkey LH were studied and used extensively for the study of hormonal changes in health and disease and other researches. With his coworkers, Laumas had developed a nonclusive intravas copper device for long-term male contraception.

Other Contribution: Laumas was instrumental in establishing the Department of Reproductive Biology at All India Institute of Medical Sciences and founding the Hormone Foundation for promotion of research on hormones. He served on the expert committee on Reproductive Biology and Fertility Control of Indian Council of Medical Research and of National Institute of Family Planning. He also edited Research Work in India on Intrauterine Devices (ICMR, 1969). He was Chairman, WHO symposium on Metabolic Effects of Contraceptive Steroids (Mexico, 1974).

Awards and Honours: Laumas received National Family Planning Award (1969-70) and Dr Dossibhai JR Dadabhoy Oration (Bombay Obstetric and Gynecological Society’s Silver Jubilee) (1976). He was a Member, National Academy of Medical Sciences (India), Indian Society for the Study of Reproduction and Endocrinology, Endocrine Society of India (also President), Association of Physiologists and Pharmacologists of India, Biochemical Society of London and International Society for Study of Reproduction (USA).
