Kailash Narain Mehrotra obtained his PhD (1959) from University of Western Ontario, Canada specializing in entomology. He served as the Pitamber Pant Fellow & Professor, Department of Entomology & Agricultural Zoology, Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi and Professor of Entomology, Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi.
Academic and Research Achievements: Mehrotra had made significant contributions to the physiology and biochemistry of insects, particularly in the area of cholinergic system in the different parts of the insect nervous system. He has also worked on sex pheromones; phagostimulants and deterrents; consumption and utilization of food; physiological effects due to insecticides; and on carbohydrate, lipid and amino acid metabolism in insects. Mehrota’s researches have potential for agricultural application. For instance, his work on the properties of the properties of the enzyme acetyltransferase in houseflies, desert locust, mite and rat brain could find use in designing selective insecticides.
