Summary

Chelakara Sivarama Vaidyanathan did his PhD (1954) from University of Madras. He worked as CSIR Emeritus Scientist, Professor, Department of Biochemistry and Dean, Faculty of Science (1974-75), all at Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore.

Academic and Research Achievements: Working in the areas `biochemistry and enzymology’, Vaidyanathan contributed to the understanding of the metabolism of aromatic compounds, elucidated several new pathways and discovered new enzymes with novel types of mechanism of action. He demonstrated the fission of aromatics by plant enzymes. He also obtained evidence for the involvement of superoxide anions in certain enzyme- catalyzed reactions.

Other Contributions: Vaidyanathan served as Member, Senate Committee for Research and Academic Policy, IISc (1974-75), and UGC Review/Advisory Committee for many universities. He was Life Member of the Society of Biological Chemists (India), Association of Microbiologists, and Member, Guha Research Conference. He was on the Editorial Board of Indian Journal of Biochemistry & Biophysics (1976-77), and also served as Associate Editor, Journal of the Indian Institute of Science (1978-82).

Awards and Honours: Vaidyanathan was conferred the Golden Jubilee Award by the University of Mysore (1969), PS Sarma Memorial Award by Society of Biological Chemists (India) (1975), JC Bose Award (1976) and Hari Om Ashram Trust Award (1976). He was elected Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore.
