Summary

Dipankar Chakravorty obtained his BSc (Physics Hons) and MSc (Tech) (Radio Physics and Electronics) degree from Calcutta University. After working as a lecturer in the Department of Physics, Jadavpur University for a year he went to USA and earned his PhD LE Cross in 1965 on the electrical properties of glasses under very high pressure. He worked as a Post-doctoral Research Associate for a year in Materials Research Laboratory, Pennsylvania State University, on ferroelectric materials. He retired in 2002 and is continuing his work as INSA Senior scientist (2003-07) and now as an INSA Honorary Scientist.

Academic and Research Achievements: After returning to India he joined the Department of Metallurgical Engg., IIT Kanpur first as a Research Associate in an NBS (USA) project under Professor EC Subbarao and then as a faculty member. He was involved in the interdisciplinary programme in Materials Science and was the Head of Advanced Centre for Materials Science (1976-82). His research concerned about glass fibre technology, memory switching glasses and oxide semiconducting glasses. In 1987 he moved to Calcutta as Mahendra Lal Sircar Professor of Physics at Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS) and served as the Director (1993-99). His major contribution has been in the synthesis and characterization of a wide variety of nano composites. He has published over 270 research papers and guided 25 PhD and 33 Technical Theses.

Other Contributions: Dr Chakravorty has established a Centre on Nano Science with the support of DST at IACS.

Awards and Honours: Professor Chakrovorty received Material Research Society of India Prize (1992 and 1995), INSA Prize for Materials Science (2005) and DST National Research Award in Nano Science and Technology (2007). He served INSA as Council Member (1989-91) and as Vice-President (1998-2000). He is also a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore and the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS). He was elected President of Materials Research Society of India (2001-04).
