Summary

Viswa Chander Dumir earned his PhD (1965) from Ohio State University, USA with a specialization in pure mathematics, number theory, geometry of numbers, and discrete geometry. He held positions as Reader and Professor at the Centre for Advanced Study in Mathematics, Panjab University, Chandigarh; as Assistant Professor at University of Illinois, Urbana, Illinois, USA from 1966-68 and at Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio. Professor Viswa Chander Dumir was a visiting Fellow at universities of Cambridge, Oxford, London and Ohio State University; Indo-American Fellow, University of Illinois and Visitor, University of Toronto, Canada.

Academic and research Achievements: Dumir had made outstanding contributions in the field of geometry of numbers and discrete geometry. His major achievements were proof of conjectures of Watson on non- homogenous minima of indefinite quadratic forms; positive values of non- homogenous indefinite quadratic forms; conjecture of Fejes Toth as saturated systems of circles and convex domains; conjecture of Mahler and Jackson; lattice double packing and lattice double covering in the plane; an analogue of a problem of Mordell; general covering density by star domains; Cusick conjecture and view obstruction problem and its generalization to subspace and flats.

Other Contributions: Dumir was Life Member, Indian Mathematical Society. He was a recipient of the Indo-American Fellowship of UGC in 1978 as also the UGC National Associateship in 1979.
