Summary

Amulya Kumar Saha obtained DSc (1968) from University of Calcutta. He was Director-Professor of Surgery (1955-64), Honorary Professor & Consultant, Orthopaedic Surgery (1965-73), and also Emeritus Professor, Orthopaedic Surgery (1973), Nilratan Sircar Medical College & Hospital, Kolkata.

Academic and Research Achievements: Saha’s significant achievements related to: glenohumeral joint; formulation and application of ‘zeroposition of joints’; dynamic stability: glenohumeral joint and shoulder girdle; kinematics and kinetics; functional classification of muscles; surgical rehabilitation for paralyzed and flail shoulder; pathomechanics; evaluation and a new approach to surgical corrections of recurrent dislocation; physiological prosthetic partial and total glenohumeral joint replacement; flail hip; and innovations in surgery. He authored four classic monographs on Shoulder Anatomy and Surgery.

Other Contributions: Saha served as Member of the Association of Surgeons of India and Emeritus Member, Societe Internationale de Chirurgie Orthopaedie et Traumatologie.

Awards and Honours: Professor Saha won the Coates Medal of University of Calcutta (1967) and Hunterian Professorship of the Royal College of Surgeons (1957). He was elected Fellow of the Indian Orthopaedic Association and Royal College of Surgeons, England and Edinburgh.
