Summary

Hassan Nasiem Siddiquie obtained PhD (1985) from Aligarh Muslim University. He was Director, National Institute of Oceanography, Goa; and also Senior Geologist, Geological Survey of India.

Academic and Research Achievements: Siddiquie did much work on marine geology and recent sediments of the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. He prepared the first bottom sediment map of the seas bordering India, which depicts many interesting features of the continental margin and is of much value in planning offshore explorations. He surveyed and estimated the reserves of calcareous sands in the lagoons of Lakshadweep and ilmenite deposits off Ratnagiri; and surveyed the sub-marine pipeline routes and the locations of platforms on the Bombay High. As Deputy Leader, he planned and organized the first Indian expedition to Antarctica and explored polymetallic nodule deposits in the Indian Ocean.

Other Contributions: Siddiquie served as Member of the Council of Association of Exploration Geophysicists and was on the Editorial boards of Proceedings of the Indian Academy of Sciences and Indian Journal of Marine Science.

Awards and Honours: Dr Siddiquie won the SS Bhatnagar Prize (1978) and Padma Shri (1983). He was elected Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences (India), Allahabad, and Geological Society of India.
