Summary

Mangalore Vivekananda got his BSc degree from Tiruchirapalli and joined the Organic Chemistry Department of Indian Institute of Science (IISc) as a student of MSc in 1943. He obtained the AIISc degree in 1948, and worked independently for the PhD degree, which he got in 1954. He did post-doctoral work with DK Banerjee (1954-57) and CD Gutsche, Washington University (1958-59), and with HC Brown, Purdue University (1959-60), after which he returned to IISc as a Lecturer and joined the Department of Organic Chemistry. He became an Associate Professor (1965) and later Professor (1969). Bhatt was Visiting Professor at Purdue University, USA (1977-78) and Mangalore University (1984-89). He was a Fulbright Scholar (1977 to 1978). From 1984 to 1989, he was an Emeritus Scientist of IISc.

Academic and Research Achievements: Bhatt has published around 135 papers including review articles. He has ten Indian and two foreign patents to his credit. Dr Bhatt has guided twenty-six PhD students including two from Egypt, and has conducted three All India Summer Institutes for University teachers.

Other Contributions: Bhatt has been the Indian representative on IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry) (1983-88).

Awards and Honours: Dr Bhatt is a Fellow of Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore (1981).
