Candanat John Dominic obtained his PhD (1959) from Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi and again a PhD degree (1965) from the University of Cambridge, UK. He was a Professor of Zoology and served as Head, Department of Zoology (1976-78), BHU, Varanasi. He was later a CSIR Emeritus Scientist at the same University.

Academic and Research Achievements: Dominic’s main contributions are in mammalian reproductive pheromones. He elucidated the source, origin, nature and control of production and neuroendocrine pathways of the primer pheromones involved in the male-induced pregnancy block (Bruce effect) and the male induction of oestrus (Whitten effect) in mice. He provided unequivocal evidence for the involvement of the vomeronasal (Jacobson’s) organ and the accessory olfactory system in several pheromone-mediated reproductive events in rodents. He also studied the biology of reproduction of the Indian musk shrew and bats, and effects of vasectomy and chemicals on the male reproductive system of mammals.

Other Contributions: Professor Dominic was a Programme Coordinator of UGC Centre of Advanced Study in Zoology (1987-90) at BHU. He served as an Editorial Board Member of several journals like Journal of Advanced Zoology, Journal of Reproductive Biology, Comp Endrocrinol Biomed Res and Proceedings of the Indian National Science Academy (Pt B). He was associated with International Network for the study and control of rodent populations. He was a Corresponding Member, Erlangen Physico-Medical Society, Germany and Member of INSA Council (1992-94).

Awards and Honours: Dominic was a Fellow, National Academy of Sciences (India), Allahabad and Zoological Society of India.
