Summary

Amar Nath Bhaduri obtained his DSc in 1963 from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. His areas of specialization were molecular enzymology and biochemical parasitology. He was associated with the Indian Institute of Chemical Biology, Kolkata, where he retired as Director. Earlier he was Professor in the Department of Pharmacy, Jadavpur University, Kolkata. He spent a sabbatical year (1975-76) at the Roche Institute of Molecular Biology.

Academic and Research Achievements: Bhaduri made a significant contribution in molecular enzymology of a new class of oxido-reductases taking UDP-galactose 4-epimerase as the prototype enzyme. His work revealed the chemical architecture of the active site in molecular details, demonstrating asymmetry in allostericity and substrate-induced catalytic suicide inhibition that are of wider biological interest. Bhaduri's work on biochemical analysis of host-parasite interaction with humanprotozoal pathogen Leishmania donovani as the model demonstrated a major biomodulatory role for Ca2+ in the parasite life-cycle.

Other Contributions: Bhaduri was a Coordinator and Project Director of UNDP-funded project on Molecular Biology and Biotechnology of parasites and Member of the National Organizing Committee, IUBMB Congress, New Delhi (1994). He was a Member of the editorial boards of the Journal of Biosciences (1986-92) and the Indian Journal of Biochemistry and Biophysics (1983-91).

Awards and Honours: AN Bhaduri won the SS Bhatnagar Prize (1979) and delivered the BC Guha Memorial Lecture (University of Calcutta, 1989). He was a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore and President, Biochemistry / Biophysics Section, Indian Science Congress (1990).
