Summary

Vishwa Gopal Jhingran obtained his PhD (1948) from the Stanford University, USA. His areas of specialization were zoology, fisheries and aquaculture. He was the Director of Central Inland Capture Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore. Academic and Research Achievements: Jhingran did extensive work in capture and culture of fishes in inland waters. His pioneering work on the problem of depletion of fisheries of Chilka Lake led to the formulation of clear-cut measures for developing fisheries of the lake. He contributed to studies on age and growth of the Indian carp Mrigal. He was the first to carry out large-scale fish-tagging operations in Chilka Lake and propagated the technique of composite fish culture, which he called 'aquaplosion', as a solution to fish shortage in the country. He wrote a book entitled Fish and Fisheries of India (1975). Other Contributions Jhingran was responsible for formulating several coordinated research projects in inland fisheries, which helped boost India's fish production in experimental pond culture from 600 to 6000 kg/ha/yr. He was the President of Inland Fisheries Society of India and Chairman, FAO Symposium on Development and Utilization of Indian Fisheries Resources, Colombo (1976). Awards and Honours: Jhingran received Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Memorial Prize (1972-73). He was a Fellow of Zoological Society of India and National Academy of Sciences (India), Allahabad. He was a Member of Sigma Xi, USA.
