Manohar Lal Munjal earned his BSc (Engg Hons) degree (1966) in Mechanical Engineering from Punjab University, ME (Distinction) (1968) in Internal Combustion Engineering and PhD (1971) from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. He has been on the Faculty of IISc since 1968. He was Chairman of the Department of Mechanical Engineering (1991-94) and of the Division of Mechanical Sciences (1999-2005). He was Convener of the Chairmen of Divisions (2003-05). On sabbatical leave from the Institute, he visited Technical University of Berlin (1979-80), University of Calgary (1986-87), Nelson Industries, Wisconsin (1987) and Ford Motor, Michigan (1994-95).

Academic and Research Contributions: Working in the area of technical acoustics, Munjal has specialized in acoustics of ducts and mufflers with particular application to automotive and HVAC noise control. He has been teaching these subjects at the post-graduate level and has published 195 papers in refereed journals, written two books: Noise and Vibration Control (World Scientific, Singapore, 2013) and  Acoustics of Ducts and Mufflers - Second Edition (John Wiley, UK, 2014), contributed two chapters in international handbooks, and has two patents and one copyright in his credit. He has guided 16 students for PhD, 7 for MSc (Engg) and over 65 for Master of Engineering.

Other Contributions: Professor Munjal has set up a "Facility for Research in Technical Acoustics" (FRITA) in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. He was President of the Acoustical Society of India (1999-2000), has been Chairman of the National Committee for Noise Pollution Control since 1998, and was Member of the Science and Engineering Council of DST (1991-94 and 2004-07), Technology Advisory Board of CSIR (1994-98), Board of Research of AICTE (1994-97) and Board of Directors of the International Institute of Acoustics and Vibration (1995-2001). He also held the honorary KSIIDC Chair (1991-94) and has been a Member of Editorial Board of the International Journal of Acoustics and Vibration, International Sound and Vibration Digest, Journal of the Acoustical Society of India, and Indian Journal of Engineering and Material Science.

Awards and Honours: Munjal was awarded the INSA Medal for Young Scientists (1975), Sir CV Raman Award of the Acoustical Society of India (1980-81), the 1983 Nelson Acoustical Paper Award, Wisconsin, SS Bhatnagar Prize (1986), Professor Rustom Choksi Award (1995), MS Narayanan Memorial Lecture Award of the Acoustical Society of India (1995), Dr GP Chatterjee Memorial Lecture Award of INSA (2006), Professor S Bhagwantam Award of the Acoustical Society of India (2005-06), DRDO Academic Excellence Award 2009, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru National Award in Science and Technology of the Madhya Pradesh Council for Science and Technology for the year 2010, and Prof. Jai Krishna Memorial Award 2013 of INAE. He is a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore, the Indian National Academy of Engineering; the National Academy of Sciences (India), Allahabad and International Institute of Acoustics and Vibration. He is a Distinguished International Member of the Institute of Noise Control Engineering (USA) and Member of the European Academy of Sciences.
